Eagle girls, Tiger boys win to highlight high school hoop play

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school basketball play this week, the Mount Abraham girls and Middlebury boys earned victories, while the Otter Valley girls and boys and the Mount Abraham and Vergennes boys came up short.
The Tiger girls also hosted Vergennes on Monday; see story on Page 1B.
EAGLE GIRLS
On Monday, the Mount Abe girls won at Missisquoi, 50-40, breaking open a close game by scoring 20 points in the third quarter. Emma Carter led the Eagles with 19 points, and Abby Mansfield chipped in 10 as the Eagles won their third straight and improved to 7-10. MVU dropped to 1-16.  
TIGER BOYS
On Tuesday, the Tiger boys knocked off host Milton, 50-43, as Jonathan Fitzcharles (12 points), Nick Holmes (11) and Trey Kaufmann (10) combined for 33 points. The Yellowjackets, coming off an upset of VUHS, dropped to 8-11. The Tigers, who will conclude their regular season at VUHS on Friday, improved to 5-14.
COMMODORE BOYS
On Tuesday, visiting BFA-St. Albans (11-8 overall) remained unbeaten in the Lake Division by besting the Commodores, 53-42. BFA took a 21-point first-half lead before holding off VUHS, which will carry an 8-11 record into Friday. Josh Lorrain led the Commodores with 11 points vs. BFA.
EAGLE BOYS
Host Missisquoi (11-8) on Tuesday pulled away late in a 77-53 victory over Mount Abe. Three Eagles reached double figures in points: Jackson Counter (16), Chris Wood (13) and Coleman Russell (12). Mount Abe will seek to break through for a win at Milton on Friday.
OTTER BOYS
On Tuesday, visiting Burr & Burton (11-8) bolted to a 23-5 first-quarter lead vs. the OV boys, but had to fend off the Otters to take a 54-40 victory. Derek Aines (11 points), Josh Letourneau (10) and MacGregor Shannon (eight) led the Otters, who dropped to 4-15 and will finish at Fair Haven (12-6) on Saturday.    
OTTER GIRLS
On Tuesday, host Hartford outlasted the OV girls, 38-29, to improve to 8-9. Gabby Poalino paced the 7-10 Otters with nine points.
