Girls’ hoop: Tigers nip Eagles; Otters split, Commodores fall

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball late last week, only Mount Abraham picked up a win, as Vergennes fell at home and Middlebury and Otter Valley lost on the road.
EAGLES
On Friday, the Eagles earned their second straight convincing home win, 67-34, this time over visiting Mount Mansfield (7-9). Emma Carter paced the Eagles with 28 points, six rebounds and five steals, and Dani Forand chipped in 12 points as Mount Abe improved to 6-10.
TIGERS
At the same time on Friday, the Tigers lost for the second straight time on the road in overtime, this time at Milton, 50-49.  Yellowjacket Madison Chalmers sank a free throw with no time left on the clock to provide the winning margin and help her team move to 7-9. The Tigers dropped to 7-9 despite three double-figure scorers: Keagan Dunbar (23 points), Payton Buxton (11) andHannah Buttolph (10).
COMMODORES
Also on Friday, North Country visited VUHS and won for the ninth straight time, 55-25, and neared the Lake Division title in the 9-6 Falcons’ first season in the league. Nikki Salley scored six points to lead the 6-10 Commodores.
OTTERS
On Thursday, host Springfield (5-11) burst to a 15-2 first-quarter lead over the Otters and hung on for a 45-41 victory. The Otters slipped to 7-9 despite 13 points from Gabby Poalino and nine from Amy Jones.
