Weybridge woman to share her experiences fighting mafia in Sicily
MIDDLEBURY — Weybridge resident Grace Weber will give a slide show and talk titled “Olives and Oranges: Growing a Mafia-free Sicily” on Friday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Ilsley Library in Middlebury.
Weber traveled to Sicily in August 2015 to volunteer for the second time for the anti-Mafia organization Libera Terra, which was mentioned in the Jan. 3 airing of “60 Minutes.” The show’s piece on “agromafia” reported that adulterated olive oil is three times more profitable for the Mafia than is cocaine.
Weber, along with many volunteers, worked lands in the fertile volcanic soil around Mount Etna, on a property that suffered heavy losses in a Mafia arson raid in 2012.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
