Pitts wins gold in indoor track

NORTHFIELD — Mount Abraham Union High School sophomore Lydia Pitts won three Division II events to highlight local athletes’ efforts at Saturday’s indoor and field track state championship meet at Norwich University.
Pitts, like other Eagle and Middlebury athletes competing as non-scoring independents, won the girls’ 55-meter hurdles and the long and triple jumps.
Pitts’ triple jump result would also have placed her first in the D-I competition, while she would have been second and third, respectively, with the same results in the long jump and hurdling events in D-I. Her winning jumps — 17 feet and one-half inch in the long jump and 35 feet-8.75 inches in the triple — were longer than the D-II state indoor records she set at UVM on Jan. 2, but they don’t count as state records because the Norwich jumping pit does not meet standard regulations, according to her mother, Kristen Pitts.
Also posting top-three D-II finishes were several Middlebury athletes. Sophomore Chloe Kane took second in the girls’ 55-meter dash, senior Wyatt Norris took second in the boys’ 300 and third in the boys’ 55, and sophomore Willem Landis placed third at 3,200 meters.
Vergennes, as an official varsity team, scored points. Sophomore Spencer Hurlburt placed 10th at 1,600 meters, moving up to fifth once non-scoring runners were removed from the mix, and the girls’ four-by-200-meter relay team of Alyse Beauchemin, Ashley Cray, Bess Gramling and Munro McLaren took seventh.
