Tiger girls’ hockey tops T-Birds; Essex is next

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team dispatched visiting Division II foe Missisquoi on Tuesday, 8-2, to stretch their unbeaten streak to 10 games.
The Tigers are 12-2-2, and according to the Vermont Principals’ Association standings are in second place in D-I behind defending champion Essex. The Hornets have a 10-3 record, but only D-I games count in the point standings for determining playoff seeds.
The Tigers next play at Essex on this coming Wednesday. MUHS edged the Hornets at home in overtime the first time the two teams met, a game that was a rematch of the 2015 D-I final.
On Tuesday, the Tigers scored three quick goals, surrendered a pair, and then scored two more to lead the T-Birds (7-4-2) by 5-2 after one period. The Tigers then tacked on three more goals in the second period.
Scoring the first three goals for MUHS in the opening period were Julia Carone, Tulley Hescock and Satchel McLaughlin. After Olivia Thayer and Renee Bouchard answered for MVU, Lauren Bartlett scored twice for the Tigers. Andi Boe assisted the first four goals, Monroe Cromis assisted two of the first three, and McLaughlin, Helen Anderson and Hescock also picked up assists in the big first period.
Polly Heminway, Anderson and Cromis scored in the second period, with Raven Payne, Hescock, Molly Wetmore, Bartlett and Boe providing the helpers.
Tiger goalie Katie Billings stopped nine shots, and MVU goalies Hannah Bockus and Mikayla Hill combined for 36 saves.
