Panther ski team is fourth at Colby
WATERVILLE, Maine — The Middlebury College ski team, highlighted by another win by women’s Nordic skier Kelsey Phinney, finished fourth at the Colby Carnival this past weekend. Dartmouth won the carnival with 921 points, followed by Vermont (917), New Hampshire (912) and the Panthers (746).
Phinney’s Nordic win came in Saturday’s 15-kilometer classic race, with a time of 49:46. Also scoring for the Panther Nordic women on Saturday were Nicolette Amber in 15th (52:48) and Kaitlin Fink in 29th (53:56). The three helped lead the group to a third-place finish.
Pacing the men’s squad in the 15K was Patrick McElravey, who crossed the line 12th in 43:08. Evan Weinman was next for the Panthers in 26th place (44:21), followed by Adam Luban in 28th (44:21).
The carnival concluded on Sunday with Nordic team sprint relays. In the women’s race the Middlebury duo of Amber and Phinney took home third-place in 20:57. The team’s other scoring duo was Fink and Katie Feldman, who were 13th in 21:57.
On the men’s side, McElravey Adam Luban took 11th in 17:51. Weinman and Lewis Nottonson crossed the line in 18:28 to finish 21st.
In alpine racing at the Sugarloaf area, Rob Cone paced the men in Saturday’s races by finishing second in the slalom in 1:29.50. Helping the men to a third-place finish in the slalom was Colin Hayes in eighth place in 1:30.70. Christopher McKenna and Ghassan Gedeon Achi finished in a tie for 15th in 1:32.51.
Caroline Bartlett paced the women in 18th in 1:36.82. The Panthers claimed spots 23, 24 and 25: Elle Gilbert in 1:38.22, Lexi Calcagni in 1:38.63, and Katy Greene in 1:38.69.
In Friday’s giant slalom, the Panther men and women both placed fourth. Hayes led the men in sixth place in 2:03.05. Riley Plant was eighth in 2:03.29, and McKenna took 12th in 2:03.56.
Bartlett placed fourth in the giant slalom in 2:07.58. Calcagni took home 13th in 2:09.37, and Gilbert placed 22nd in 2:13.24.
