Cousino in Vergennes, Gebo in Granville set pace for area wrestlers

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School wrestling team finished seventh out of 24 teams on Saturday at its own Bob Benoure Invitational Tournament, an effort highlighted by another victory by junior 182-pound wrestler Brandon Cousino.
Cousino won the crown with a 3-0 record, preserving his undefeated season, and earned the coaches’ nod as the event’s outstanding wrestler. The coaches also voted Cousino’s championship bout with Caleb Lomme of Hollis Brookline (N.H.) as the tournament’s most entertaining.
Hollis Brookline won the tournament with 176.5 points, edging Noble, Maine (167.5), and two New York teams, Saranac (161.5) and Peru (158).
Mount Mansfield (115.5), Essex (109.5) and VUHS (78) followed. Mount Abraham (36.5) took 13th, and Otter Valley (35) finished 14th.
Roman Mayer led the Eagles by taking third at 120 with a 3-1 record, and Nate Doty finished fourth at 285 with a 2-2 mark.
Also finishing in the top four for the Commodores in their tournament were Ethan Reardon, fourth at 132 with a 3-2 record; Jeb Hodsden, fourth at 152 with a 3-2 record; and Ryan Paquin, third at 170 with a 3-1 mark.
Also on Saturday, the Middlebury wrestling team went to a dual-meet tournament in Granville, N.Y., and finished seventh out of eight teams, but compiled a number of outstanding individual results. Senior Nate Gebo, wrestling at 120, led the way with a 5-0 record that included three pins and a pair of one-point decisions.
In Granville, the other Tigers who earned wins were:
• James Whitley at 145 went 4-1 with two pins, a major decision and one forfeit.
• Nick Beauchamp at 220 went 4-1 with three pins and one forfeit.
• Kyle Desabrais at 152 went 4-1 with two pins, one major decision and one decision.
• Dustin Davio at 132 went 4-1 with two pins and two forfeits.
• Joe Whitley at 138 went 2-3 with two pins.
• Alex Sheldrick at 160 went 2-3 with one pin and one forfeit.
• Justin Jackson went 2-3 with one pin and one forfeit.
• A.J. Campbell went 1-3.
