Boys’ hoop: Tigers defeat Mount Abe 51-31

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury defeated Mount Abraham to highlight area boys’ basketball in the latter half of last week. In other action, the Tigers split two games, the Eagles lost at home, Vergennes split a pair of games on the road, and Otter Valley lost to a top Division I team.
TIGERS VS. EAGLES
On Wednesday, the host Tigers used a strong defensive effort to snap a four-game skid and knock off the visiting Eagles, 51-31. Jonathan Fitzcharles (13 points) and Spencer Carpenter (six points) paced the Tiger offense. Coleman Russell scored eight to lead the Eagles.
On Thursday, host Missisquoi dealt the Tigers a 66-46 loss. MUHS led after one period, 14-12, but the T-Birds outscored the Tigers in each of the other periods to pull away. Austin Sullivan’s 30 points led MVU, and Trey Kaufmann scored 16 for the Tigers.
On Saturday, the Tigers topped visiting Milton, 58-47. MUHS pulled away as Ryan Miller drilled four threes and scored all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter. Kaufmann led the 3-10 Tigers with 13, and Kyle Apgar scored 14 for Milton (6-8).
Also on Saturday, visiting Missisquoi improved to 8-6 with a 59-45 win in Bristol. Sullivan and Richard Walker each scored 22 points for the T-Birds. Chris Wood scored 14 to lead the 0-14 Eagles.
COMMODORES
On Wednesday, VUHS took an 11-point halftime lead in defeating host Milton, 63-56. Junior guard Adam Gill sparked the victory with a career-high 33 points, and the Commodores hit 14 of 18 fourth-quarter free throws to hold off the Yellowjackets. Logan Bean scored 16 for Milton.
On Saturday, host BFA-St. Albans (6-8) defeated VUHS, 65-52. Dylan Bradford and Gill scored 16 apiece to lead VUHS (5-9), which will host the Tigers on Tuesday.
OTTERS
On Friday, the Otters took a 15-11 lead at Mount Anthony, at 11-2 one of D-I’s highest-ranking teams. But the Patriots took charge with a 31-3 second period on the way to an 83-36 victory. Derek Aines led the 3-11 Otters with 15 points.
