Shoreham man killed in head-on crash in Bridport Wednesday
BRIDPORT — A Shoreham man was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Route 125 in Bridport on Wednesday afternoon.
Vermont State Police identified the deceased as 66-year-old Thomas L. Scheufler, who was driving a 2004 Pontiac Vibe eastbound on Route 125, at around 3:20 p.m. when it was struck by a Toyota Rav4 being driven by 21-year-old Shelby Fernandez of Ticonderoga, N.Y., according to VSP.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Fernandez (travelling west) crossed the center-line of the road and struck Scheufler’s Pontiac head-on, near the intersection of Route 125 and West Market Road, which is west of Route 22A.
Scheufler was pronounced dead at the scene, while Fernandez was taken to Porter Hospital for treatment of knee pain and later released, according to state police.
Deborah Hawkins, 66, of Shoreham, a passenger in Scheufler’s car who was later identified as his wife, was also taken to Porter for treatment of rib pain. She, too, was later released.
Both vehicles sustained extensive front-end damage, authorities said.
Police report the weather was clear and the road was dry.
The Bridport Fire Department, Middlebury Regional EMS, Agency of Transportation Highway Department, and Addison County Sheriff’s Department assisted VSP at the scene. The VSP Crash Reconstruction Team also responded.
The crash is still under investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact VSP’s New Haven barracks at 388-4919.
