Tiger girls’ hockey knocks off Essex
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team earned a key victory at home on Tuesday, 3-2 in overtime, over two-time defending Division I champion Essex. The game was a rematch of the 2015 final, won by the Hornets.
Helen Anderson netted the game-winner 26 seconds into the extra session, with an assist from linemate Tulley Hescock. Andi Boe scored a goal earlier for the Tigers and set up a Monroe Cromis strike. Abby Gleason and Lauren Bartlett also picked up assists for the Tigers, while goalie Rowan Hendy stopped 15 shots.
For the 7-3 Hornets, Olivia Miller Johnson scored twice in the second period, and goalie Vika Simons stopped 22 shots.
D-I standings are incomplete on the Vermont Principals’ Association website, but the 8-2-1 Tigers almost certainly assumed first place with what was their fifth straight victory.
MUHS will visit league rival Spaulding on Saturday and host Lake Placid (N.Y.) on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Center.
