In girls’ hoop: VUHS bests Solons; Tigers, Eagles topped

ADDISON COUNTY — In recent local high school girls’ basketball action only Vergennes picked up a win, as Mount Abraham dropped a pair of games at Fair Haven’s holiday tournament, and Middlebury came up short at home.
The Commodores also hosted a game on Monday; see story, Page 1B.
EAGLES
On Dec. 23, host Fair Haven defeated the Eagles, 53-41, in the opening round of the Slaters’ tournament. Nicole McCardle (15 points), Lexi Quenneville (13) and Kelsi Bean (10) led the Slaters.
Emma Carter scored 18 points for the Eagles, and Jesse McKean chipped in 12.
On Saturday, Mount Abe gave Burr and Burton a battle, but fell, 50-44. The Eagles had opened their season with a 28-point loss to the 4-4 Bulldogs. Carter (13) and McKean (11) again led Mount Abe, which dropped to 1-6. Carter was named to the all-tournament team.
The Slaters (3-3) defeated Proctor for the tourney title, 45-28. Quenneville scored 15 and was named the event’s MVP and Halle Coloutti added 10 for the Slaters in the championship game.
TIGERS
On Dec. 22, visiting Mill River (3-2) hung on for a 46-39 victory over MUHS. The Minutemen led by 17 before the Tigers cut the lead to two points in the final minute. MRU then iced the win from the line. Keagan Dunbar scored a game-high 24 points and added seven rebounds for the 3-2 Tigers.
COMMODORES
On Dec. 23, the Commodores coasted past visiting Montpelier, 63-20. Sara Poirier-Thayer filled up the stat sheet for VUHS with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Nikki Salley contributed 11 points and seven boards, and Shay Pouliot and Caroline Johnston chipped in eight points apiece as the Commodores improved to 4-1 heading into this week.
