Vergennes Police Log: City police help DCF remove three children from Main St. apartment

VERGENNES — Vergennes police officers on Dec. 14 helped Department for Children and Families personnel remove three young children from a Main Street apartment for the children’s welfare and protection, according to Police Chief George Merkel.
Merkel said conditions in the apartment, to which police had responded to deal with a domestic dispute the week before, were highly unsanitary.
City police returned to the apartment on Dec. 15 while one of the tenants retrieved belongings.
In other incidents between Dec. 14 and 20, Vergennes police:
• On Dec. 14 in separate cases served abuse-prevention orders to residents of High and Main streets.
• On Dec. 14 picked up a loose Chihuahua and took it to the Vergennes Animal Hospital.
• On Dec. 15 responded to a South Water Street residence to an initial report of a woman having trouble breathing that was updated to her possibly attempting suicide; the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad took her to Porter Hospital.
• On Dec. 15 ticketed the driver of a tractor-trailer truck for driving it while overweight on Monkton Road.
• On Dec. 15 cited one 23-year-old Northlands Job Corps student for furnishing alcohol to three minor students. In the same incident, police cited a 16-year-old Northlands student for speeding and careless and negligent operation for driving a car with three passengers, all Northlands students, 60 mph on Macdonough Drive; and issued court diversion paperwork for possession and consumption of alcohol to two underage passengers.
• On Dec. 16 dealt with a disruptive female Northlands student who was refusing to leave the center; she left.
• On Dec. 16 persuaded an upset South Maple Street teen to attend school.
• On Dec. 16 began investigating a $527.78 bad check passed at an area business; police said a citation is pending.
• On Dec. 16 persuaded a relative of a homeowner to hand over a set of keys at the request of family members.
• On Dec. 16 issued a motorist tickets for possession of marijuana and failing to stop at a traffic stop at the intersection of West Main Street and Hopkins Road.
• On Dec. 17 issued a motorist tickets for possession of marijuana and speeding at a West Main Street traffic stop.
• On Dec. 17 took a disruptive Vergennes Union High School student out of school and to a relative’s home at the request of school officials and her parents.
• On Dec. 18 ticketed the driver of a tractor-trailer truck for driving it while overweight on Monkton Road.
• On Dec. 18 checked an empty Ice House Court home because it had a light on, but found nothing wrong.
• On Dec. 18 handled a two-car accident on North Green Street.
• On Dec. 18 cited former Addison Northwest Supervisory Union Superintendent Thomas F. O’Brien for embezzling, a charge they said stems from “directing unauthorized payment of over $4,000 for unused vacation time to himself upon his retirement date.” O’Brien, who retired in June 2014, is scheduled to answer the charge in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, on Feb. 22.
• On Dec. 19 spoke to the owner of a barking Green Street dog.
• On Dec. 19 grounded a car stopped on Route 7 that was being driven without registration or insurance.
• On Dec. 20 issued two tickets for violating the city’s overnight parking ban on city streets.
• On Dec. 20 looked unsuccessfully for a truck reported to be speeding and weaving on Route 22A.
