Opinion: Court’s leniency caused harm

My 17-year-old son was assaulted by Chad Levasseur in Vergennes in 2013. Levasseur was looking at a maximum sentence for assault of up to 15 years behind bars. Levasseur was charged with a felony, and sentenced to 30 days in jail. Yes, you read it right. Way to go.
While out and on probation, Levasseur assaulted another person, and was charged with a second felony. He was recently sentenced. Levasseur is now going to serve 6-18 months in jail, minus his time served. Too bad someone else had to get hurt.
Too bad he wasn’t handed a better sentence the first time, and no one else would have been hurt. What a joke. Justice is not served.
