Castleton rallies past women’s hockey

MIDDLEBURY — Visiting Castleton scored in the final seconds of regulation and then again in overtime to surprise the Middlebury College women’s hockey team on Saturday, 3-2.
Castleton, which entered the game ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III, improved to 9-1-1. The Panthers, ranked No. 5 last week, dropped to 4-2-1 as their first-semester play concluded.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead 3:50 into the game when Kelly Sherman scored her third of the year by netting a loose puck just outside the crease. Castleton had two power plays in the first period, but could not capitalize. The period ended with the Panthers holding a 12-5 shots advantage.
Middlebury’s Maddie Winslow made a pair of great moves early the second period, but was denied by Spartan goaltender Jess Cameron.
Middlebury took a 2-0 lead at 9:51 with a power-play goal. Anna Van Kula tipped home a Victoria Laven shot from the point, with Sherman getting the second assist.
Castleton made it a 2-1 with 28 seconds left in the second period on a Taylor Steadman goal. Aimee Briand fished the puck out of the corner before sending it to the far side, where Steadman one-timed it home.
The Spartans held a 12-3 shots advantage in the third period. Middlebury best chance came on a three-on-none break, but Cameron denied Janka Hlinka. 
With Cameron pulled in favor of an extra attacker, the Spartans tied the game with only 3.5 seconds remaining, when Anna Daniels potted the rebound of a Hannah Rose shot from the point. 
Castleton went on the power play 1:53 into the extra session and ended the game 1:25 later. The game-winner came on an shot from the left point by Rose that slipped past screened Panther netminder Julia Neuburger.
Middlebury held a 27-24 shots advantage, with Cameron making 25 saves and Neuburger stopping 21 pucks.
