Boys basketball: OV tops MAU; VUHS, MUHS lose
ADDISON COUNTY — Otter Valley defeated Mount Abraham to highlight local boys’ basketball play on Tuesday evening, while in other games Middlebury lost at home and Vergennes came up just short on the road.
OV VS. MOUNT ABE
The Otters picked up a 74-56 victory over the Eagles, their second of the winter over Mount Abe, in a back-and-forth contest. OV took a big first-period lead, but Mount Abe responded with a 16-4 second quarter to pull within one at the half, 32-31.
Then the Otters took charge in the third period, with their press taking a toll as they outscored the Eagles by 25-12 to lead by 14 entering the fourth. Derek Aines poured in a career-high 32 points for OV, and Dylan Mackie added eight as OV improved to 2-1.
Caleb Bonvouloir (13) and Coleman Russell (10) paced the 0-5 Eagles.
TIGERS
Visiting South Burlington pulled away from the Tigers in the final minutes for a 61-46 victory. The Tigers cut a 16-point Rebel lead to four points with less than three minutes to go in the game, but SBHS used full-court pressure to take charge again.
Ryan Miller scored seven of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help MUHS rally, and Jonathan Fitzcharles also scored 14 for the Tigers. Jack Hounchell added eight as MUHS dropped to 0-4.
COMMODORES
Host Twinfield improved to 5-0 by holding on for a 63-61 victory over the Commodores. Three Trojans reached double figures. The Commodores had a chance to tie the game from the line with three second to go, but missed two foul shots.
Adam Gill scored 15 points to lead VUHS, which dropped to 1-4 with its fourth straight setback since an opening win at South Burlington.
