Girls’ basketball wrap: Tigers, Eagles, Commodores earn wins
ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball play late last week, Mount Abraham and Middlebury picked up wins while Vergennes split a pair of games. Otter Valley was idle, but will visit MUHS on Monday night.
EAGLES
On Wednesday, the Eagles picked up their first victory, 54-21, at the expense of visiting Missisquoi.
The Eagles bolted to a 32-9 halftime lead against the winless T-Birds. Emma Carter scored 20 points to lead the 1-2 Eagles, while Dani Forand sank four 3-pointers in a 12-point night andJesse McKean chipped in eight assists.
TIGERS
On Friday, the Tigers got past visiting Winooski, 46-43, behind a balanced effort. Keagan Dunbar led the way with 15 points, while Hannah Buttolph andPayton Buxton each scored nine. Riley Fenster chipped in 10 rebounds as the Tigers improved to 2-1. Lydia Nattress and Mariah Metivier each scored 10 for the 1-1 Spartans.
COMMODORES
On Wednesday, host Winooski pulled away late to defeat VUHS, 49-39. The Spartans went on a late 8-0 run when the Commodores’ Nikki Salley had to sit with foul trouble. Salley finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead VUHS, while Sara Poirier-Thayer (nine points) and Melina Myers (six) also contributed to the attack. Metivier scored 17 as the Spartans won their opener.
On Saturday, the Commodores improved to 2-1 by coasting at Montpelier, 48-15, breaking the game open with a 21-2 third quarter. Caroline Johnston led the way with 13 points, Poirier-Thayer scored nine, Shay Pouliot and Salley (eight rebounds) each chipped in eight, and Ciara McClay notched six points and six steals.
