VUHS team, Otter win are bright spots in area boys’ basketball action

ADDISON COUNTY — As the high school boys’ basketball season opened last week, Vergennes split two road games, Middlebury dropped a pair away from home, and Mount Abraham came up short on the road.

COMMODORES
On Wednesday, the Commodores used a big second half to defeat host Division I foe South Burlington, 68-57, in the opener for both squads. Josh Lorrain and Adam Gill scored 19 apiece to pace VUHS, with most of Lorrain’s coming in the second half as the Commodores pulled away from a 27-27 halftime tie.
Hunter O’Connor added 12 points for VUHS, and Brent Woods chipped in 10. Ben Moran’s 14 points paced South Burlington, which led, 21-16, after one period.
On Saturday, host Harwood won its season opener at the Commodores’ expense, 74-67, as four Highlanders struck for double figures.
Gill scored a game-high 23 points, and Dylan Bradford added 20 points for VUHS (1-1).
TIGERS
On Friday, host Colchester defeated MUHS, 65-51, as the 1-0 Lakers outscored the Tigers by 25-16 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Laker Thomas Meadows scored a 26 points, including 13 in the fourth period, and Anthony Park hit all eight of his fourth-quarter free throws for CHS.
For the 0-2 Tigers, Jon Fitzcharles scored 23, and Trey Kaufmann chipped in 12.
On Wednesday, the Tigers lost at Burr & Burton, 50-40. Kaufman led the way with 12 points, while J.D. Goettelmann added nine points and eight rebounds, and Fitzcharles chipped in eight points and nine boards.
EAGLES
On Thursday, host Randolph took advantage of what Mount Abe coach Martin Clark called his team’s off shooting night and foul trouble to win, 64-37, in the opener for both squads. The Ghosts outscored the Eagles, 15-5, in the second quarter to take a decisive 28-12 halftime lead.
Coleman Russell scored 11 to lead Mount Abe, and Clark said Jackson Counter andChris Wood rebounded well. Nathan Grey’s 13 points led Randolph.
