A Commodore win highlights the opening of girls’ basketball season

ADDISON COUNTY — In season-opening high school girls’ basketball action last week, Vergennes won big on the road, but Otter Valley, Middlebury and Mount Abraham all started out with setbacks.
COMMODORES
The Commodores rolled past host Harwood, 53-17, on Friday after taking a 30-9 halftime lead.
Contributors for VUHS included Nikki Salley, with 11 points and 12 rebounds; Sara Poirier-Thayer, nine points, five steals and three blocked shots; Caroline Johnston, seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists; and Ciara McClay, six points and three steals in her varsity debut.
TIGERS
Defending Division II champion Mill River defeated visiting MUHS (which has been bumped to D-I this winter), 51-39, on Friday behind balanced scoring. Keagan Dunbar tossed in a game-high 23 points for the Tigers, and Hannah Buttolph added nine points and six rebounds for MUHS.
OTTERS
On Thursday, visiting Proctor took advantage of cold shooting by the OV girls to win, 36-22. OV trailed by 20-16 late in the first half when Abby McKearin (18 points) hit two three-pointers to make it 26-16 at the break, and the Otters managed just six second-half points. Amy Jones (six points) and Lexi Hedding (five) led OV.
EAGLES
The Eagles had a tough time against two D-I foes at a four-team tournament hosted by Champlain Valley. On Friday, four Burr & Burton Academy players reached double figures as the Bulldogs defeated the Eagles, 60-32. Emma Carter scored 17 for Mount Abe. CVU trounced BBA for the tourney title on Saturday.
In Saturday’s consolation game, Burlington breezed past the Eagles, 91-54, as three Seahorses combined for 46 points. Carter led the Eagles with 26.
