Middlebury women’s basketball tops JSC, hit 3-0

JOHNSON — The Middlebury College women’s basketball defeated host Johnson State, 57-52, on Nov. 24, to improve to 3-0. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday at Skidmore at 2 p.m.  
Middlebury held off a late surge vs. the 1-4 Badgers, who cut the Panther lead to two with 44 seconds left, but a layup and three free throws iced the win.
Colleen Caveney scored five points as the Panthers took a 14-9 lead after one period. Middlebury settled for a five-point lead at the half, 26-21, after leading by 23-13 late in the second period.
Out of the intermission, the Badgers rattled off an 8-1 run capped off by a Domonique Carter-Stanley layup to take a 29-27 lead. The Panthers responded with a 8-2 run highlighted by two Catherine Harrison layups for a 35-31 advantage. Johnson’s Brooke Williams knocked down a three-pointer, and Middlebury led by 35-34 heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Panthers opened the final quarter with a 7-0 run that included back-to-back Sarah Kaufman layups and a layup and free throw by Alex Huffman to make it 42-34 at 7:28. Johnson cut it to 52-50 with 44 seconds remaining, but a layup from Harrison and free throws from Eileen Daley and Kaufman sealed the victory.
Kaufman led all scorers with 18 points to go along with five rebounds, while Harrison scored 12 points, pulled down seven boards and added two blocked shots. Daley recorded a career-high 13 rebounds to go with five points, while Huffman chipped in nine points, four rebounds and three assists.
Sarah Voorhis led Johnson State with 17 points, and Carter-Stanley recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds.
