Opinion: Porter is making a mistake in excluding part-timers from health benefits
I am deeply concerned that Porter Medical Center is withdrawing benefits for part-time employees and pushing these workers to the exchange. Porter Medical Center could be a leader for universal healthcare and should certainly be able to provide quality care to their employees in other, more progressive ways than the model they have chosen.
Instead the trustees hired a CEO who has taken the corporate path, which is neither progressive nor equitable. Knowing that the exchanges are increasing premiums this calendar year at no less than 5.9 percent, and have become unaffordable overnight, couldn’t there can be another way to provide better and less expensive care to the employees? Hint: It has nothing to do with insurance or insurance companies.
I hope the trustees hear this message and order Ms. Boggs to reverse this decision immediately.
