Eagles girls lose to U-32 in soccer playoff overtime
EAST MONTPELIER — Host U-32 on Wednesday eliminated the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team from the Division II playoffs, 2-1, in double overtime.
The loss snapped the No. 5 defending champion Eagles’ eight-game winning streak, and they concluded their season at 11-7. The Raiders improved to 15-2 and moved to a Saturday final vs. No. 2 Milton, the last team before Wednesday to defeat the Eagles.
Maya Mashkui’s goal 50 seconds into the second extra session ended Wednesday’s cold, wet semifinal in Montpelier.
Raider Aine Kennedy had given the Raiders the lead in the fifth minute of the game, but Mount Abe junior Ernesta McIntosh continued her recent scoring binge later in the half to tie the game.
Both teams’ goalies, U-32’s Natalie Lavigne and Mount Abe’s Kamille Snell, were busy and made 11 saves.
