Schoolchildren show their appreciation to city police

VERGENNES — First- and second-graders of the Champlain Valley Christian School recently paid a visit to the Vergennes Police Department. They dropped off bags that included a “survival kit for law enforcement officers.”
As a document included in the bags enumerates, the kit includes such things as: Lifesavers, to remind you of the many times you have been; Tootsie Roll, because you sometimes have to roll with the punches; Peppermint Pattie, to help everyone keep their cool; Snickers, to help keep your sense of humor; Payday, since you are not doing this for the money; and Hershey’s Kisses, to show our love for you.
“I was most impressed with the effort the group of both students and teachers made, acknowledging us as police officers and our profession,” Chief George Merkel said. “I was overwhelmed with the thought and time that went into their efforts as well as being touched by the support for my officers.
“I am so proud of each and every one of them.”
