Five-town fire departments to hold food drive

BRISTOL — The Bristol Fire Department, in conjunction with the fire departments of Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro, will conduct a town-wide food drive on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m.-noon. The theme, once again, is “Help Us Fill the Firehouse.”
2015 marks the second year that the food drive will include all five towns served by the Have a Heart Food Shelf. The fire departments in each of the five towns will open their station doors to accept non-perishable food donations. The Bristol Fire Department also receive donations in the Shaw’s parking lot in Bristol.
During the most recent three-month period, the Have a Heart Food Shelf served 60 households, or approximately 150 individuals. Forty-two percent of the families served were from Bristol, 14 percent from Lincoln, 10 percent from Monkton, 12 percent from New Haven and 22 percent from Starsksboro.
Traditionally, the number of families served increases during the winter months, especially around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, when the food shelf will serve over 100 families.
This food drive is the Bristol Fire Department’s eighth year collecting non-perishable items for the local food shelf. During the first seven years, the department collected over 10,000 pounds of non-perishable items, and department members say thanks goes entirely to the generosity of the community.
