VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Sept. 22 ended up citing a Starksboro man after responding to reports of a disturbance behind the Creekview Apartments complex, reports of activity that included property damage and machete wielding.
When police arrived they discovered several bicycles damaged, but no one around. They were able to determine that Michael J. Gardner, 45, of Starksboro had come to look for a Creekview resident because he was upset about a business deal involving an iPad. When the resident did not come to the door, police were told Gardner began tossing bikes around and took one with him when he left.
When the resident came out, police said he carried a machete with him, something police said he admitted to them later. Police said they identified Gardner and then cited him for unlawful mischief and disorderly conduct.
In other incidents between Sept. 21 and 27, Vergennes police:
•  On Sept. 22 cited Travis Simpson, 20, of Vergennes for driving with a civilly suspended license, an action taken after a Green Street resident said Simpson had threatened him during a dispute involving the resident’s sister’s car.
•  On Sept. 22 began investigating a resident’s complaint that he was receiving a series of anonymous harassing text messages.
•  On Sept. 22 were told a car parked either at Merchant’s Bank or Shaw’s Supermarket had been sideswiped.
•  On Sept. 22 heard from a resident that her estranged husband had sent two women to harass her; police could not find anybody. Two days later, the women said one of his friends was also around her residence.
•  On Sept. 22 issued court diversion paperwork to an 18-year-old Northlands Job Corps student who had been drinking.
•  On Sept. 22 destroyed drugs and paraphernalia that a Vergennes Union Elementary School staff member found at the school’s outdoor classroom.
•  On Sept. 23 took a report that a New York car had passed a resident’s car that had stopped at a Main Street crosswalk to let pedestrians cross.
•  On Sept. 23 took a report of a two-car accident on Green Street.
•  On Sept. 24 checked the welfare of a city teen who was said to be possibly suicidal by a Brandon-area teen; police said she was upset, but did not plan to harm herself.
•  On Sept. 24 accepted a debit card that a resident found on Green Street and notified the bank.
•  On Sept. 25 were told by a Main Street resident that her WIC delivery had been stolen, an incident that police are investigating.
•  On Sept. 25 took a report of a two-car accident on Main Street.
•  On Sept. 25 cited Joseph Farrell, 33, of South Burlington for driving with a civilly suspended license and speeding.
•  On Sept. 25 were told that two 14-year-old teens had been driving and drinking, and notified their parents and school authorities.
•  On Sept. 25 were told that three youths were breaking glass on School Street; they were gone when police arrived, but police cleaned up the glass.
•  On Sept. 26 cited Gary Briggs, 26, of East Middlebury for driving under the influence of alcohol after stopping him at the intersection of School and South Maple streets; police allege his blood-alcohol content was 0.146. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.
•  On Sept. 26 spoke to a driver who had been reported to be driving erratically and determined he was sleepy. Police told him to pull over and rest.
•  On Sept. 26 checked out a report of gunshots near Shaw’s, but found nothing.
•  On Sept. 26 responded along with Vermont State Police to a reported underage drinking party on Long Point Road in Ferrisburgh, but found nobody.
•  On Sept. 26 accepted a key that a resident found in Settlers Park.
•  On Sept. 27 discovered a container in the St. Peter’s Church parking lot holding 94.4 grams of marijuana.
•  On Sept. 27 arrested Marvins Edouard, 19, of Brooklyn, N.Y., for simple assault and lodged him in the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. Police alleged he punched a female student in the eye.
•  On Sept. 27 checked a report of a strange man walking into the Walker Avenue elderly housing TV room; police determined the man was a new resident who wanted to watch the New England Patriots football game.
•  On Sept. 27 responded to a barking dog complaint on South Maple Street; nobody was home, and because the dog was so loud police put the animal into an enclosed porch and left the owner a note.
