Soccer: VUHS girls, Eagle boys winners
ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school soccer play earlier this week, the Mount Abraham boys and Vergennes girls picked up big road wins, the Otter Valley boys settled for a tie away from home, while the Vergennes and Middlebury boys came up short on the road.
VUHS GIRLS
On Tuesday, the VUHS girls surprised Division II’s first-place team, Milton, beating the Yellowjackets, 1-0, in overtime. Senior striker Felicia Armell netted the game-winner, and Commodore goalie Anya Sonwaldt stopped 17 shots to earn the shutout. Milton goalie Madison North had six saves. The Commodores’ win improved their record to 4-6-1 and snapped the 9-2 Yellowjackets’ six-game winning streak. It was also Milton’s first loss to another D-II team.
EAGLE BOYS
On Monday, Mount Abe topped host Green Mountain Valley, 2-0, in a rematch of the 2014 Division II final. Charlie Meyer scored in the first half with an assist fromCaleb Bonvouloir, and Bonvouloir tallied after the break off a feed from Nick Catlin for the Eagles. Nick Szczecinski andBonvouloir combined for four saves in goal for the 6-2-2 Eagles, and goalie Trevor McGlaflin stopped six shots for the 3-4 Gumbies. The Eagles remain in the race for a top-four seed in D-II.
OTTER BOYS
On Tuesday, OV and host Mill River tied, 1-1. MacGregor Shannon scored for OV 10 minutes into the first half, and MRU equalized 15 minutes into the second half. Colin Nicklaw made 11 saves for the 2-5-3 Otters, and Austin MacMurray made seven saves for the 1-10-1 Minutemen.
VUHS BOYS
On Monday, host Milton defeated the Commodore boys, 5-0. The Yellowjackets evened their mark at 5-5-1, while the Commodores dropped to 2-8 despite goalie Antonio Ruggiero’s 15 saves.
TIGER BOYS
On Monday, host Rice improved to 7-2 with a 5-1 victory over the Tiger boys. Leland Gazo and Kyle Decoster combined to make four saves for the Green Knights. Duncan McCabe converted a penalty kick, and goalie Wilder Perera stopped nine shots for the 3-6-1 Tigers.
