Opinion: Election fundraising rules clarified

I am under the impression that political candidates are allowed to keep funds raised for the campaign if not spent in campaigning. Please tell us if this is true.
If it is, we must have a number of very rich people in our country, and even in little ol’ Vermont.
If it is not true, my apologies to these selfless servants of the people.

Editor’s note: According to the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office, surplus campaign funds may not be put to personal use; they may be donated to “another candidate, PAC or political party … a charity, the Secretary of State Services Fund or carried over to the next election cycle for a new campaign.”
