Eagle football winning streak comes to an end
BRISTOL — The undefeated Burr & Burton Academy football team on Saturday in Bristol snapped the Mount Abraham/Vergennes squad’s two-game winning streak, 35-8.
Although the Eagles intercepted standout Bulldog quarterback Griffin Stalcup three times, Stalcup still threw for three scores and ran for a fourth as BBA held onto first place in Division II at 6-0. The D-II Eagles dropped to 2-4 and will host another undefeated team this coming Saturday, Otter Valley, the first-place team in D-III.
Stalcup tossed touchdown passes to Ray Gormley, Cody Roberts and Sean Apps, while Kevin Gormley had a rushing TD for the Bulldogs, who led at the half, 28-0.
But Eagle coach Lee Hodsden noted the 35 points were the second-fewest BBA has scored so far this season.
“The kids played hard for sure and gave it their best effort,” Hodsden said.
Hodsden said the Eagles were also able to move the ball, but mistakes ended a few long drives. He credited the Eagle line — Josh Roscoe, Jack Eisenhower, Matt Mullin, Kyle Pearsall, Broc Clark and tight end Bradley Sturtevant — with some good work.
Anthony Warner, Trevon Smith and Jeb Hodsden picked off passes, and Hodsden scored on a 41-yard run in the fourth quarter. QB Coleman Russell then threw the two-point conversion to Devon Kimball.
Overall, Russell completed 12 of 28 passes for 108 yards, including five completions to Sturtevant for 55 yards. Ryan Paquin led the ballcarriers with 20 rushes for 86 yards.
