90-year-old artist displays works in Middlebury
MIDDLEBURY — Edgewater Gallery at Middlebury Falls celebrates nonagenarian artist Catherine “Catchi” Childs this October, with an exhibit of figures and still lifes from a 75-year painting career. The internationally exhibited artist demonstrates her broad range and sophisticated aesthetic in this collection. Edgewater Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, Oct. 9, from 5-7 p.m., during the final Middlebury Arts Walk of the 2015 season.
“To me, painting is one of the most personalized forms of self expression, and sometimes I feel as if I am creating a symphony — with each instrument representing a color in the spectrum,” says Childs. “When they are in harmony, beautiful music is created in the painting. My most thrilling moment comes when my brush touches the canvas for the first time. At that point, all my emotions and training are used to create the overall mood that will dominate the finished work. My design, brushwork and colors all blend together to convey the mood, feeling and emotional tension that creates an inner excitement and deep personal involvement in each creation.”
Listed in both “Who’s Who in American Art” and “Who’s Who of American Women,” Childs has also been a member of the National Association of Women Artists for over 50 years and served as its president for four years. In addition, she is a member and past president of the New York City Society of Women Artists and a member of New York Artist’s Equity. Among others, her paintings are in the public and private collections of the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, N.J.; Hofstra University, New York; and the Rockefeller family.
The exhibit, titled “CATCHI,” will be on view at Edgewater Gallery in October. For more information call 802-458-0098, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit edgewatergallery-vt.com.
