Team discusses moving bus stop and parking during RR bridge project

MIDDLEBURY — A local management team for a rail bridges project in downtown Middlebury heard about and discussed various cost estimates at a Tuesday meeting.
The team also discussed:
• The prospect for a temporary Addison County Transit Resources bus shelter on Seymour Street. That proposed stop has drawn criticism from local residents about the extra traffic it might bring and its proximity to neighboring homes. Project planners reviewed eight potential sites that could host the bus shelter while work is proceeding on Merchants Row, where the stop is currently located. Locations on Seymour Street and South Pleasant Street were identified as the least problematic. The cost of the Seymour Street stop was placed at around $80,000, and South Pleasant Street was estimated at around $130,000.
• The location of a temporary parking structure off Bakery Lane behind the Ilsley Library to compensate for spaces that will be lost during the rail bridges project. The town of Middlebury owns the proposed site for the parking structure. That site is also being considered for a multi-story, mixed-use development, but that project is still two or three years away from coming to fruition, team members reasoned.
