Vermont State Police Log: Police investigate campground issue

ADDISON COUNTY — On the morning of Sept. 1 Vermont State Police looked into a theft complaint at Kampersville in Salisbury. State police met with one of the campground owners, who told the troopers that a woman whose family had stayed on the grounds for 11 days had paid for her stay with bad checks.
Police met with the woman, identified as 38-year-old Misty Lambert of Rutland, who said she thought she had a verbal agreement with the campground owner in terms of paying with several postdated checks and that she had no intentions of cheating Kampersville. The campground owner told police there was no such agreement.
After Lambert told police she could not currently pay the full amount of the balance owed, they cited her for theft of services. Lambert is due to answer the charge on Oct. 26 in Addison County Superior Court, criminal division.
In other recent activity, Vermont State Police:
•  On Sept. 7 at around 3:35 p.m. recovered a mountain bike on River Road in New Haven. Anyone missing a bicycle is asked to contact the New Haven barracks of the state police at 802-388-4919.
•  On Sept. 10 at 4:46 p.m. responded to a crash involving two motor vehicles at the intersection of East Street and Market Road in Bridport. Police report that Aleena LaFleur, 32, of Bridport was driving a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and failed to yield when entering the intersection, pulling out in front of a 2003 Ford Escape driven by Gary Payne, 62, of Bridport. It was raining and the road was wet.
Police said that Payne attempted to avoid LaFleur’s Jeep and in the process rolled over after traveling into the ditch. No injuries were reported.
The trooper judged the Ford to be a total loss; the Jeep Grand Cherokee sustained front-end damage but was driven from the scene. The Bridport Fire Department, Town Line First Response and Addison County Sheriff’s Department all responded to the scene. No court action was anticipated.
•  While conducting patrol on Sept. 12, observed a disabled vehicle on Route 116 South in Bristol. The trooper approached the disabled vehicle, and identified the driver as 22-year-old Rosalie M. Wright-Lapin of Middlebury. Police report that Wright-Lapin showed signs of intoxication, and she refused to provide a preliminary sample of her breath. The trooper took Wright-Lapin to the New Haven barracks and cited her for refusing to take a driving under the influence test.
•  On Sept. 13 at 11:27 p.m. responded to a reported structure fire on Angel Road in Whiting. While on scene police made contact with William Letters, 59, of Whiting, whom police claim was driving while under the influence of alcohol. Letters refused to provide a preliminary sample of his breath. He was later transported to the New Haven state police barracks for processing. Police released Letters after citing him for driving under the influence test refusal, second offense.
•  Last week reported on their participation in the Labor Day weekend National Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), from Friday, Sept. 4, through Monday, Sept. 7.
Sadly, there were two fatalities on Vermont roadways during the holiday weekend. There have been 37 fatalities in Vermont this year to date — two were pedestrians and four were bicyclists. Lt. Garry Scott of the VSP Traffic Operations Unit reported that 27 percent of this year’s fatalities were either unbelted or improperly restrained.
Over the Labor Day Weekend, VSP responded to three crashes involving impaired drivers and 39 total crashes; troopers made 12 DUI arrests, issued 329 speeding tickets and assisted more than 45 motorists.
