Boys’ socer teams see tightly contested games
ADDISON COUNTY — In recent local high school boys’ soccer action, Middlebury and Otter Valley settled for ties, while Vergennes took an overtime setback.
All four local squads were also set to play on Wednesday after the deadline for this issue: OV was scheduled to visit VUHS, MUHS to visit Rice, and Mount Abraham (2-0) to head north to BFA-Fairfax.
On this past Friday, the Tigers battled visiting Colchester (1-0-1) to a 1-1 tie. Jacob Blow scored for the Lakers in the 29th minute, and Jonathan Fitzcharles equalized for the 0-1-1 Tigers before the half ended.
Tiger goalie Wilder Perera stopped nine shots, while Laker goalie Thomas Colgrove was credited with one save.
On Saturday, the Otters and Fair Haven played to a 0-0 tie in a game contested at Proctor High School. OV Coach Dick Williams said he believed his team had an edge in possession and denied the Slaters many dangerous chances. OV goalie Colin Nicklaw worked a five-save shutout, Williams said central defender Collin Eugair played well, and the Otters nearly won in OT, only to see Maxwell Williams denied by a diving save.
On Friday, visiting Montpelier defeated VUHS, 4-3, in overtime. The Commodores had first-half leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, but the 2-0 Solons equalized in the second half, and Davor Vukoja, who set up two goals, scored the game-winner six minutes into OT. Isaac Avery scored twice for Montpelier.
For VUHS, Camden Simpson notched a goal and an assist, Max Ratti-Bicknell andEzekiel Palmer scored, and Lathrop Brownell picked up an assist.
VUHS goalies Ethan Sausville andAntonio Ruggiero combined for nine saves for the 0-2 Commodores, a total matched by Solon keeper Zack Vanden Bergh.
