Cornwall picks Kemp to replace Dave Sears as selectman

CORNWALL — Brian Kemp will serve the balance of late Cornwall Selectman Dave Sears’ term until Town Meeting Day next March.
Cornwall selectboard members picked Kemp at their Sept. 1 meeting, according to Cornwall Town Clerk Sue Johnson. Resident Frank Broughton had also been in the running to fill the seat.
Kemp is the manager of Mountain Meadows Farm, an organic beef operation in Sudbury. He is also president of the Champlain Valley Farmer Coalition
Kemp lost a close, 116-98 race to incumbent Selectwoman Magna Dodge this past March.
Sears died following a medical episode on July 11, at age 56. He was widely known as a longtime broadcaster of Middlebury Union High School varsity football and Middlebury College sports. He had served for 35 years on the local fire department and five years on the Cornwall selectboard.
Kemp in March will have the option — along with other possible candidates — to run for the remaining two years left on Sears’ term.
