Otters blitz St. Joseph in football opener
BRANDON — The host Otter Valley Union High School football team had little trouble with overmatched and undermanned Mount St. Joseph on Saturday, winning by 62-14 in the opener for both Division III squads.
OV scored five touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 36-0 lead and played its second string for most of the rest of the game. A tougher test is expected this Saturday when BFA-Fairfax visits in a rematch of last fall’s D-III final. The Bullets opened by defeating Spaulding on Saturday, 48-22.
On this past Saturday, senior quarterback Carson Leary — moved their from tailback after his record-setting 2014 — rushed for 47- and 64-yard touchdowns the first two times he touched the ball. He finished with 164 yards on four carries and a third touchdown and also threw a 13-yard first-quarter TD pass to Will Ross, the only pass he completed in three attempts.
In all, the Otters approached 400 yards rushing, with Tyson Cram going for 124 yards and a score on eight carries. Jove Bautista added a 15-yard scoring run in the first quarter, and Colby McKay, who subbed in at QB for Leary, and Collin Parker also scored for OV. Cram also picked off a pass.
For MSJ, which dressed just 16 players, in the second half Clay Drinwater ran for a score and Joe Ruby found Jonah Farrow for a 64-yard touchdown pass.
