I would like to clarify the intent of my recent letter to the Addison Independent (Thursday, Aug. 20). In the same issue, the editorial cites my letter in a way that might lead someone to infer that it was written in support of an easterly bypass. That is not the case.
It proposes only that the selectboard authorize an independent study by a competent agency that would locate possible routes for a rail bypass and evaluate them with respect to their social and economic benefits, the former taking priority over the latter, and weighing them against the costs and effects of the currently proposed project. Those possible routes could be east or west. Indeed, my personal preference is for a westerly one.
