Landslide! Bristol wants to join county’s waste district

BRISTOL — Bristol residents overwhelmingly voted to join the Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) in Tuesday’s election.
“We’re thrilled that people turned out to vote and supported what the selectboard feels is the right decision for Bristol,” said Therese Kirby, Bristol town administrator.
The town voted 173 to 8 in favor of joining ACSWMD and 172 to 8, with one spoiled ballot, to ratify the admission agreement worked out between the selectboard and ACSWMD this past July.
With the vote going in favor of both measures, Kirby expects the steps for Bristol to join ACSWMD to be completed by mid-October. Residents have until Sept. 25 to petition for a reconsideration of the vote. Once the 30-day reconsideration period is over, town officials and ACSWMD each have their own next steps. For Bristol, those steps include official certification of the vote by the town clerk, paying minimal legal fees to ACSWMD, and certifying that landfill operations have ceased.
Once these next steps are accomplished and ACSWMD officially receives Bristol as a new member, the Bristol selectboard will appoint a representative and an alternate to the ACSWMD board of supervisors.
In the meantime, Bristol residents will continue to have full use of the ACSWMD facility south of Middlebury on Route 7 as they have since the selectboard and ACSWMD reached agreement last July.
Ongoing questions about recycling, trash pick-up in Bristol, and using the ACSWMD facility should be directed to the Bristol town office and to ACSWMD, as appropriate. Information about what kinds of items can be delivered to the ACSWMD facility can be found at www.addisoncountyrecycles.org.
