Man killed in parachute crash in West Addison

WEST ADDISON – An East Hardwick man was killed late Monday afternoon in West Addison in a parachuting accident.
Vermont State Police reported that Joseph G. Crossley, 68, died as a result of a hard landing after parachuting out of an airplane. Police were called to a field off Route 17 around four miles west of Route 22A just beyond the intersection with Jersey Street at 4:24 p.m. on Monday. Crossley was dead when police arrived.
Witnesses told troopers that Crossely’s parachute had deployed and his initial decent was uneventful. But, sometime during the flight, he began to spiral, lost control of the chute and never regained it before crash landing.
Troopers continue to investigate circumstances surrounding the incident, including the possibility that Crossley might have suffered a medical episode while in his descent. Police ask anyone who saw the tragic accident or who have relevant information to contact them at 802-773-9101.
