Middlebury Police Log: Police look into stalking complaint

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a stalking complaint at a Court Street residence on Sunday, Aug. 9.
Police said a man called the department at around 2:30 a.m. to report his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend had parked his car in the caller’s driveway. Police recommended the woman take out a stalking order against the ex-boyfriend, who left the home before authorities arrived.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Investigated a possible domestic assault involving a local resident on Aug. 3.
•  Warned a driver who had left a dog in a locked vehicle with the windows rolled up on Washington Street on Aug. 3.
•  Assisted a resident in removing an unwanted ex-spouse from a Court Street apartment on Aug. 4.
•  Gave a ride to a disoriented man on Porter Medical Center campus on Aug. 4.
•  Continued their investigation into an alleged sexual assault that had been reported in Middlebury early last month.
•  Received a complaint about a man who had allegedly been making the employees of a Merchants Row business “nervous” on Aug. 4.
•  Responded to a report of a drunken woman who had fallen in the road at the intersection of Main Street and Merchants Row at a little past 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 5. Police turned her over to her sober spouse.
•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a drunken woman who had fallen in the Shaw’s Supermarket parking lot on Aug. 5 at around 1:30 a.m.
•  Helped resolve a family dispute at a Route 7 South home on Aug. 5.
•  Investigated a child custody dispute at a Court Street residence on Aug. 5.
•  Responded to a report of a person sitting in the middle of the intersection of Birchard Park and Rogers Road on Aug. 5.
•  Issued court diversion paperwork to a minor who had allegedly used a fake ID to buy alcohol at a Court Street Extension store on Aug. 5.
•  Investigated an accident in which a tractor-trailer snagged and broke a telephone line on Feed Mill Lane on Aug. 5.
•  Collected a dog that had been running loose on Seymour Street and delivered it to the Homeward Bound animal shelter on Boardman Street on Aug. 5.
•  Spoke with a woman who had allegedly been acting “suspiciously” at the Subway restaurant on Aug. 5.
•  Were informed that a dog had been struck by a vehicle and killed on Route 7 North on Aug. 5. Police contacted the dog’s owner.
•  Received a report about a drunken woman walking on Washington Street at a little after 4 p.m. on Aug. 6. Middlebury Regional EMS took the woman to Porter Hospital.
•  Served a temporary restraining order on a person in the Court Street Extension area on Aug. 6.
•  Destroyed some hypodermic needles that had been found on Mill Street near the Otter Creek on Aug. 6.
•  Responded to a report of a man hollering and swearing near the railroad tracks behind Danforth Pewter on Seymour Street on Aug. 6. Police were unable to locate such a person.
•  Were informed that someone had driven away from the Middlebury Short Stop without paying for gas on Aug. 7. Police said they have no suspects.
•  Spoke with a man on Aug. 7 who had been defrauded of $320 when he sent the money to a false organization claiming to be called “Department of Legal Affairs.”
•  Served a temporary restraining order on a woman in the North Pleasant Street area on Aug. 7.
•  Received complaints about a man who had been driving back and forth on Boardman Street while blowing his horn on Aug. 7.
•  Received a report about a man who had allegedly become belligerent when the Addison County Humane Society told him he couldn’t adopt a cat on Aug. 7. Police issued a no-trespass order on the man.
•  Responded to a reported argument between a mother and her son in the Route 7 South area on Aug. 7. Police referred the son to Porter Hospital, where he spoke with Counseling Service of Addison County staff.
•  Investigated a report of a suicidal woman on Middlebury College campus on Aug. 7. Police determined the woman had accidentally cut herself while under the influence of alcohol.
•  Responded to a report of a woman lying in the road at the intersection of College and Weybridge streets on Aug. 8. Police turned the woman over to Middlebury College Public Safety.
•  Investigated a report of a man threatening to harm himself in the North Forty Lane area on Aug. 8. Police said the man claimed he had been presenting a pretend scenario and had no real intention of harming himself.
•  Responded to a noise complaint at a South Main Street residence at just before midnight on Aug. 8. Police said they found a group of people dancing to music played through a car stereo. The resident agreed to turn down the music. Meanwhile, police found several people in the group had been drinking alcohol and were not 21 or older. Police issued court diversion paperwork to those individuals.
•  Investigated a two-car crash, with injuries, at the intersection of Route 7 and Foote Street on Aug. 9. Police said one driver was taken to the hospital to be looked at for a headache; no other injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
•  Were informed of the theft of a cell phone from the municipal swimming pool off Buttolph Drive on Aug. 9.
