Champs, Marlins make mark in league swim meet
ESSEX — The Vergennes Champs and Middlebury Marlins swim teams both had some strong individual and relay performance at this past weekend’s Champlain Valley Swim League Championship Meet, which was held Friday and Saturday at the Sand Hill Pool in Essex.
The Vergennes team earned fifth place with 714.5 points and Middlebury was right behind in sixth place with 681.5 points.
The Edge Swim Club of Williston, the defending state champions, won the eight-team meet with 2,714 points, followed by the Town of Essex Swim Team (2,006.5), Burlington Tennis Club (1,751.5) and Burlington Country Club (944). St. Albans garnered 632 points and Winooski tallied 307.
Vergennes, which moved up from sixth place last year, was named Most Improved Team. The Champs boasted only one champion — Noah Konczal won the 10-and-under boys 25-yard breaststroke — but they also scored a number of critical second- and third-place finishes from Will Clark, Carlyn Rapoport, Max Ratti-Bicknell, Anna Rakowski, Nate Muzzy, Noah Engvall and Olivia Hawkins.
Two Vergennes relays earned second place: girls U-12 free relay team (A. Rakowski, Emma Huestis, Jordan Jewell and Grace LeBeau) and boys U-10 free relay team (Nate Muzzy, Calder Rakowski, Konczal and Parker Kayhart).
Vergennes Swim Team President Martha Kenfield received the CVSL’s Allen Cummings Most Valuable Supporter Award.
The Marlins saw one swimmer claim two titles: 11-year-old Thomas Denton won the U-12 100-yard individual medley and the 50-yard fly. Other Middlebury winners were Mary Ann Eastman (U-14 girls 200 free), Ellie Ross (U-12 girls 50 fly), Aidan Chance (U-10 boys 25 back) and Fraser Milligan (U-12 boys 100 free).
Earning seconds and thirds for the Marlins were Nora Wootten, Courtney White, Kess Moulton, Eastman and Ross on the girls’ side, and, for the boys, Charlie Hodson, Chance, Milligan and Denton.
In the relays, the Marlin quartet of Spencer Doran, Denton, Devon Kearns and Milligan were second in the U-14 boys 200 medley.
The CVSL Championship meet featured 547 swimmers.
Vermont swim teams will gather this coming weekend in Hartford at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center for the season-ending Vermont Swim Association summer championship meet.
