Dunaway and Mayer exhibits will open Friday
MIDDLEBURY — Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury presents a stunning exhibition for June: “Art en Route,” by up-and-coming artist Missy Dunaway, with highlighted works from local artist Nick Mayer.
After spending the past two years traveling abroad, Dunaway has returned home with paintings of fishing flies and Turkish carpets, representative of her fascination with the color and pattern found in the world around us. Marked by exquisite strokes and intricate patterns, her acrylic ink-on-paper works are the perfect complement to the sublime details of Nick Mayer’s watercolors of fish and other wildlife.
The exhibitwill be on view at Edgewater Gallery all month, with an opening reception on Friday, June 12, from 5-7 p.m. The reception will feature a fly-tying demonstration by local fishing expert Peter Burton and light bites from 3 Squares Café of Vergennes.
Dunaway, born into a Navy family, spent much of her life moving on a frequent basis. As a result, she learned to collect belongings in the less cumbersome form of paintings and drawings. During her recent experience as a Fulbright Fellow in Turkey, she became enchanted with the historical tradition of painting as a way to document and preserve national treasures.
Then a holiday visit to the home of a friend in England introduced her to the art of fly tying. Inspired by these two art forms, her new interests manifested into her June exhibition at Edgewater and a beautiful new collection of some of her favorite things.
Nick Mayer is a full-time nature illustrator whose style embraces the natural beauty of fish and other marine life with a unique scientific perspective. He is a former marine biologist, adventurer and lifelong fly fishing addict. A skin-of-his-teeth survival falling overboard off a commercial fishing vessel into the Bering Sea followed by a near float plane crash in Northern Labrador inspired Nick to pursue his true calling as an artist. Painting is his passion and he has developed a celebrated touch.

The gallery is holding a reception for its June featured exhibit, “Missy Dunaway: Art en Route,” on Friday, June 12, from 5-7 p.m. during the Middlebury Arts Walk. Besides showing works by Dunaway and Mayer, the gallery will host a fly-tying demonstration by Peter Burton.
