County athletes bring home gold in five events at state track and field meet

EAST MONTPELIER — Athletes from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes won events at Saturday’s Division II championship meet at U-32 High School in East Montpelier.
MUHS junior Hannah Buttolph repeated as the girls’ high jump champion, clearing five feet, two inches to win by six inches. That height would have won the D-I meet by four inches.
Mount Abe freshman Lydia Pitts continued her dominance in girls’ D-II hurdling, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.46 and the 300 in 49.84.
Two relay teams also brought home gold. The all-senior Commodore four-by-100-meter boys’ squad of Sebby Crowell, Liam Hayes, Chris Castillo and Jake Dombek prevailed in 45.66.
The MUHS girls’ 4×100 squad of senior Kat Townsend, freshman Megan Townsend, junior Gretta Groves and freshman Chloe Kane won in 52.65.
The Tiger girls’ and boys’ squads each finished fourth overall, the best team performances among the local schools.
U-32 swept both titles. The U-32 girls rolled to the win with 162 points, followed by Harwood (66), Rice (61) and MUHS (52). The Eagles took sixth (39), and VUHS was 13th (4).
On the boys’ side, U-32 edged Lyndon, 131-122, with Harwood (58) third and MUHS (45) in fourth. VUHS (29) finished seventh, and the Eagles (7) tied Windsor for 12th.
Many other athletes excelled by placing in events.
On the girls’ side, for the Tigers senior Julia Vorsteveld took second in the triple jump; Kat and Megan Townsend placed at both 100 and 200 meters; Kane took fifth at 100 meters; the 4×400 relay team was fifth and the 4×800 relay team took fourth.
For the Eagle girls, sophomore Sofia Wolak took third in the long jump, junior Amelia Bruhl was fourth in the high jump, and Pitts also placed in the long and triple jumps.
Seniors Paige Stolen and Ally Stearns scored the points for the VUHS girls, taking fifths at 800 meters and in the shot put, respectively.
On the boys’ side, the Tiger 4×100 and 4×800 relay teams each placed second, while the 4×400 team took fourth. Also for MUHS, junior Chris Grier finished second in the javelin, junior Chris Garner was third at 800 meters, junior Wyatt Norris placed at 100 and 200 meters, junior David Dregallo took fourth at 3,000 meters, senior Ryan Biette was fifth in the 400, and senior Burke Farrell sprinted to fifth in the 100.
For the Commodores, Dombek raced to third at both 100 and 200 meters, Castillo took sixth in the triple jump, and the 4×400 relay squad finished third.

For the Eagle boys, sophomore Finn Clements tossed the javelin into fourth place, with senior Chris Carter right behind him in fifth in the same event, and sophomore Sam Kuhns and freshman Chris Boyer tied for sixth in the pole vault.
