Springfield softball eleminates Eagles in quarterfinal

SPRINGFIELD — Host No. 3 Springfield eliminated the No. 6 Mount Abraham Union High School softball team from the Division II playoffs in a Friday quarterfinal, 7-2.
The setback was just the second in seven games for the Eagles, who had surged at the end of the regular season to earn, and then win, a first-round home playoff game. They finished at 10-8.
Springfield improved to 13-5 behind the five-hit pitching of Jade Twombley. The Cosmos scored two runs in the third on two walks, a single and a wild pitch, and then five in the fourth on six hits, five with two outs, off losing pitcher Rachael McCormick.
