VUHS upset highlights high school baseball play
ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes Union High School baseball team pulled off an upset in the Division II playoffs on Tuesday, but the season came to an end for the Mount Abraham and Otter Valley squads in first-round D-II games on the road. Middlebury had already failed to qualify for the D-I postseason.
COMMODORES
The No. 14 Commodores edged host No. 3 Milton, 4-3, in their first-round game, winning a playoff game just a year after the school lacked the numbers to field a varsity team.
Winning pitcher Hunter O’Connor surrendered three runs in the first three innings, and then kept the 10-6 Yellowjackets off the board for the next three innings; he allowed seven hits and walked six while striking out five. Dylan Raymond came on and worked a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one, to earn the save.
The Commodores scored one run in the first and three more in the third. Chris Leach went three-for-three and drove in three runs for VUHS and scored a run to spark the VUHS attack. Josh Sickles contributed an RBI hit, Devon Kimball had two hits and scored a run, and Camden Simpson andNate Rowell each had one hit and scored a run for the 4-13 Commodores.
VUHS is set to play on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the winner of a Wednesday game between No. 6 Lake Region (10-5) and No. 11 Fair Haven (5-10).
EAGLES
No. 4 Bellows Falls (12-5) defeated No. 13 Mount Abe, 12-1, as Terrier hurler Chris Armstrong threw six scoreless innings. Ernie Brouillard took the pitching loss for the Eagles, who finished at 4-12.
OTTERS
No. 2 Lamoille (15-2) ousted the No. 15 Otters, 7-2. Losing pitcher John Winslow allowed seven hits, and Tyler Allen doubled home a run for OV, which finished at 1-15-1.
