MUHS softball advances; VUHS, OV out
ADDISON COUNTY — In first-round Division II softball playoff action on Tuesday, Middlebury advanced with a home win, but Vergennes and Otter Valley lost on the road.

TIGERS
The No. 5 Tigers blanked visiting No. 12 Woodstock, 6-0, as pitcher Payton Buxton tossed a one-hit shutout, her third in the past five games, striking out 12 and walking two. A two-out hit in the seventh spoiled her no-hit bid. She has allowed just two runs in her past five starts.
On the MUHS attack, Lily Smith andAhleiyah Mason-Rivera each poked two hits, and Hannah Lawrence had one hit and drove in three runs.
The Tigers improved to 9-6 with their fifth straight win and advanced to a Friday afternoon quarterfinal at No. 4 Milton (11-6). The Tigers lost at Milton this season in 10 innings, 9-8.
COMMODORES
The No. 9 Commodores fell at No. 8 Lyndon, 8-5. Megan Martin led the VUHS offense with two hits and an RBI. VUHS finished its season at 8-9, while Lyndon improved to 10-7.
OTTERS
Milton ousted No. 12 OV, 8-3, as Yellowjacket Kara Donaldson homered twice and drove in three runs, and teammate Kaitlin Reilly drove in four runs with three hits. Milton pitcher Katie Rayner fanned 14 and allowed one hit, Megan Santell’s seventh-inning double that drove in two runs.
Hannah Williams took the loss for the 6-11 Otters, who came up short in their bid to defend their 2014 title.
