Eagles, Tigers are big winners in softball

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school softball action earlier this week, Mount Abraham and Middlebury won big, while Otter Valley lost at home to a Division I rival.
Vergennes was set to travel to St. Johnsbury on Tuesday, but that game was moved to Wednesday after the deadline for this edition of the Independent. The Commodores carried a 6-5 record and four-game winning streak into that scheduled contest.
EAGLES
Mount Abe thumped host Rice, 21-4, as Dani Forand drilled a three-run homer and poked two other hits. Rachael McCormick added four hits, scored three runs and drove in a pair. Audrey Shahan went the distance to earn the pitching win. The Eagles improved to 7-6.
TIGERS
The Tigers snapped a three-game losing skid, all against top teams, by coasting past host Champlain Valley, 19-3. Details were unavailable about a win that pushed the Tigers’ mark to 3-5.
OTTERS
On Monday, visiting Rutland’s hurler Jillian Beayon tossed a complete-game one-hitter at the Otters, striking out 12 and walking none, as the Raiders topped the Otters, 8-1. Amy Jones doubled for OV in the bottom of the fourth, moved to third on a Laura Beth Roberts groundout and scored on Maia Edmunds’ sacrifice bunt. Hannah Williams took the loss, tossing seven innings and allowing eight hits and nine walks while fanning four.
