Eagles excell in home track and field meet

BRISTOL — Nine Mount Abraham Union High School track and field athletes won events at a three-team home meet on Monday, and four of them won multiple events as visiting Division I power Essex won the overall competition.
Freshman Lydia Pitts — fresh off placing in three events at the major Burlington Invitational two days before — led the way by sweeping all four of her events, two hurdling races, the 400-meter run, and the long jump.
Fellow Eagle freshman Emma Radler won the girls’ high jump and pole vault, senior Nick Turner prevailed in both boys’ horizontal jumping events, and sophomore Andrew Raymond sprinted to wins in the boys’ 100- and 200-meter races.
Radler and Turner along with Pitts also placed in Burlington against many D-I competitors (see story, Page 2B), an encouraging development according to Eagle co-coach Katie Ivory.
“That is something we always tell them every year, that the Burlington Invitational and the Essex Invitational, those are the two toughest meets of the year,” Ivory said. “Those are better competition than our state meet.”
Pitts’ second place in the girls’ 100 hurdles in Burlington might be even more indicative that she is a D-II contender than her dominance on Monday, Ivory said.
“That is very exciting,” she said. “That is something I’ve been thinking about, what is coming out of that.”
Also posting wins for the Eagles on Monday were senior Chris Carter and sophomores Sam Kuhns, Peter Foley, Finn Clements and Delaynah Leavitt.
Ivory said Carter, like Turner, has been steadily improving and could also be a threat in the state meet if he chooses and focuses in on one discipline — and in the annual decathlon that follows the school year.
“Chris Carter is just steadily solid at everything he does,” she said. “He could do anything and be good at it, but what is his one thing that is really going to be his thing?”
It was also no surprise to see some of the Eagles’ younger athletes come through on Monday, Ivory said — she and the other Eagle coaches are looking for more of the same in the future.
“We have a lot of young girls, 9th-graders especially. We also have a pretty decent 9th-grade, 10th-grade cohort for guys,” Ivory said. “It’s exciting to see who will step up this year and even next year.”
Overall, the Essex boys won with 99 points, followed by Mount Abe with 75. The small BFA-Fairfax contingent scored just three points on the boys’ side. The girls’ scores were Essex, 113; Mount Abe, 64; and Fairfax, 1.
