Credit Union in Vergennes is robbed

VERGENNES — Vermont Federal Credit Union in Vergennes was robbed on Friday afternoon, a patron of the financial institution said.
Vermont State and Vergennes police in brief phone conversations confirmed the robbery of a Vergennes bank but could not could not confirm to the Independent which one.
A patron of the Vermont Federal Credit Union branch in Middlebury said she overheard a phone conversation at around 4:15 p.m. involving credit union employees talking about a robbery at the Vergennes branch.
A city resident said at 4:30 p.m. on Friday that police were in heavy presence in downtown Vergennes and were setting up checkpoints.
Vermont Federal Credit Union is located at the UTC Aerospace property off Panton Road.
This is the second Friday afternoon robbery of a Vergennes financial institution this month. On March 13 at about 2:20 p.m. a man displayed a knife to a teller at the People’s United Bank on Main Street in Vergennes and demanded cash. The teller complied and the man left the bank and fled north.
Anyone who saw anything or has information on either robbery is asked to contact Vergennes police at 877-1152 or state police at 388-4919.
