Bixby Library groups get creative minds thinking

VERGENNES — Bixby Memorial Library has committed to a long-term program of support for local writers and creative minds. This program includes two weekly writing workshops, a monthly movie club, and a guest writer’s lecture series. Each program is scheduled to be ongoing and is open to the public.
Aspiring dramatic writers (i.e., screenwriters, playwrights, graphic novelists, etc.) are invited to join Jay Dubberly’s merry band of misfits as he helps participants work through projects of length. Dubberly specializes in screenwriting, but his many talents include inspiring and guiding projects that incorporate the three-act structure. The group meets Monday evenings in Bixby’s Otter Creek Room from 6 to 8 p.m.
Muir Haman, Bixby’s Adult Services Librarian, leads the second weekly writing workshop. On Thursday evenings, he guides participants through short formats (i.e., poetry, flash and other short fiction, essays, memoir, etc.) and creative exercises. Writers and creatives of any type are welcome if they are interested in exploring the ways that the hand can spur and hone their creative impulse. This group also meets from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Otter Creek Room.
Dubberly and Haman have also joined forces to organize the Bixby Movie Club, which shows a film of note on the first Friday each month. A short introductory remark precedes each showing and an optional discussion of the film is offered afterwards. The next showing will be a 2011 Nominee for Best Animated Feature, “L’illusioniste,” a French film about the adventures of an out-of-work illusionist and a young girl that he meets in Scotland. It will be screened on Friday, March 6, at 6 p.m. Free popcorn will be available.
Each group is offered free of charge. Attendees are asked to pre-register. Questions and registration should be directed to Muir Haman at 802-877-2211, ext. 208, or [email protected].
