Tiger skiers compete in pursuit race

HUNTINGTON — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ and girls’ Nordic teams on Saturday competed at the Sleepy Hollow Nordic Center in a “pursuit race” that combined both of the sport’s disciplines, classic and freestyle skiing.
Competitors skied one 3-kilometer classic leg, stopped in a transition area to switch skis, then went back out to complete the race on a different 3K freestyle leg.
MUHS Coach Chas Lyons said his Division II skiers fared well against mostly Division I competition during what was an enjoyable event, especially considering the many disappointing postponements this winter has brought.
“It was a very fun day with some great performances from the team,” Lyons said.
Haven Tate submitted the best individual effort, taking 13th in the boys’ race, while Morgan Pratt led the Tiger girls by finishing 25th.
Champlain Valley won the boys’ event, scoring 24 points to edge second-place Essex (36), followed by U-32 (37), Colchester (67), Mount Mansfield (76), MUHS (115), Burlington (174) and Montpelier (197).
MMU’s Alec Pelton won the boys’ race, followed by CVU’s Harken Spillane.
U-32 scored 20 points to win the girls’ race, followed by MMU (33), Essex (47), CVU (63), Burlington (69), Colchester (161), MUHS (162) and Montpelier (205).
U-32’s Eliza Merrylees and MMU’s Molly Larson ran 1-2 in the girls’ race.
