VUHS grapplers excel at tourney; Tigers win duals
VERGENNES — Five Vergennes Union High School wrestlers placed on Saturday at Mount Mansfield’s Jason Lowell Tournament as the Commodores took fifth out of 18 teams competing.
Brandon Cousino led the way by winning at 170 pounds, edging Spaulding’s Sam Kuckuk in the final, 7-5.
Also for VUHS, Trevon Smith was second at 126, Kyle Kingsley took third at 113, Ethan Reardon was fourth at 132, and Ryan Paquin finished fourth at 182.
St. Johnsbury won the tournament with 136.5 points, followed by Northern Adirondack Central (N.Y.) with 121, Mount Mansfield (108), Saranac (N.Y.) with 107, and VUHS with 72.
Otter Valley was 12th with 31 points, with most of those coming from Tyson Cram, who took third at 132 pounds.
TUESDAY DUALS
Also, VUHS hosted both Middlebury and Mount Abraham on Tuesday. The Tigers won twice, defeating VUHS, 36-10, and Mount Abe, 42-18. VUHS defeated Mount Abe, but the score and details were not available before Wednesday morning’s deadline.
In contested matches between MUHS and VUHS:
• Tiger Nate Gebo pinned Kingsley in 1:43.
• Reardon defeated Kyle Desabrais, 13-3.
• Tiger James Whitley pinned Commodore Luke Stinchfield in 1:16.
• Tiger Nick Beauchamp pinned Ryan Paquin in 2:48.
In contested matches between MUHS and Mount Abe:
• Tiger Joe Whitley pinned Josh Russin in 4:45.
• Desabrais pinned Eagle Josh Hardy in 4:48.
• Eagle Dylan Little pinned Dave Many in 1:33.
