VUHS girls’ hoop team wins one, loses one
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ basketball team split a pair of games late last week and stands at 4-11 heading into a Monday, Feb. 2, home game vs. Missisquoi.
On Thursday, host Milton rallied for a 43-39 win over the Commodores thanks to 23 points and 11 rebounds by Selena Patterson. Patterson also hit five of six fourth-quarter free throws to help the 6-8 Yellowjackets secure the victory.
Coach Billy Waller said injuries and illnesses reduced his roster to eight players, and the Commodores could not hold onto a six-point lead with three minutes to go.
Nikki Salley recorded 16 points and eight rebounds and Caroline Johnston chipped in six points and four assists for the Commodores, who suffered their fifth loss by 10 points or fewer.
The Commodores bounced back on Saturday to snap a five-game skid by defeating visiting Montpelier, 58-25. VUHS blew the game open with a 21-2 third period.
Salley led the way with 22 points and 10 boards. Sarah Poirier-Thayer contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists; Brianna Gebo filled the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds and four steals; and Shay Pouliot added seven points.
